The Garbage Fairy

15 07 2007

Saturday we cleaned the house. It had been a rough week with the recent re-do of the closet and getting some different end tables night stands (they are still cheap, but look better in the room) and so the house was in much disarray. One of my jobs as the fatherly figure is to take out the garbage, Fiona just believes that’s my job, not hers, but we’re definitely not assigning gender roles to the jobs because I still help with cooking and cleaning. Fiona commented the day before how “the garbage fairy” hadn’t come, which was, of course, my hint to take out the garbage…. Garbage FairyMaybe I was kind of duped into the cooking thing but it’s okay. It will be interesting to see what we have for dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Growing up my siblings and I were assigned chores and I remember reflecting on the time when I would have kids to do the dishes and take out the trash, etc. Well today is the day. While Fiona was washing some very grateful-to-be-washed windows I strapped Kaisa into her starfish holder (because it looks like I have a starfish glued to my sternum) and put our three month old to work. Like most kids her age she has an amazing grip once she’s got hold of something, so we put that to good use. Move over Dad! There’s a new garbage fairy in town!

Ok…just to clarify, I DO take out the garbage, quite often actually! Usually Nathan is not home when it’s NEEDS to be taken out so I just do it. Sometimes it only makes it as far as the back porch, and I’m grateful to him for making sure it gets the rest of the way to the Garden Park dumpster. So….yes, definitely no gender role assigning here. :)

Second, Nathan wasn’t duped into making meals. I was commenting to him the other night that I often feel I don’t get much help around the house and that was what he volunteered to help with. Thanks, Nathan!
