Nathan, Fiona, and Kaisa Family Blog

Just another WordPress weblog

Christmas & New Year’s

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays as much as I did!  Here is a recap on ours before I go back to real life.

For Christmas this year, Nathan and I decided that we wanted to be in our own home with just our family for the first time.  It’s hard to believe, but every year since we’ve been married, we were at another person’s house on Christmas.  Crazy!  All in all it was a big success, and we loved watching Kaisa come down and get excited about opening stockings and presents.

Nathan and I decided a few weeks ago that we wanted to make Kaisa a play kitchen for Christmas.  We went to Ikea in the scratch and dent section, and within 15 minutes or so had picked up all the pieces we needed from the scrap wood and other miscellaneous items.  Everything you see on it is  from Ikea except the faucet (a pipe from a plumbing supply store), the hinges, and the vinyl (I used my cricut and vinyl sheets to make the stove top, oven front, and dial decals).  We are very proud of it, and so far Kaisa has had lots of fun with it!  She got some play food and dishes and a shopping cart for Christmas as well, so she’s got plenty to keep her busy for a while!

After we opened presents at our house, we headed over to Grandma and Grandpa Judd’s for the day.  There, Kaisa got spoiled even more (as did Nathan and I).  We had fun playing games (I got Rock Band for Wii!) and enjoying good food while watching the snow fall outside (though the drive home was nasty!)  I was grateful for a white Christmas this year.

Kaisa was afraid of her pony, dad tried to help her warm up to it.

On New Year’s Eve, Nathan and I and some other friends on our street hosted a big multi-house bash.  We stayed up eating tons of food, playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and counted down to the new year with Martinelli’s and smoke bombs.  Then we played more games.  I pooped out about 2am, but I think it was nearly 8am before Nathan climbed into bed next to me!  Crazy boy!

Since then, I have been in full nesting/baby-mode.  I have about 1 month left and I’m getting antsy to get Kaisa’s big girl room done and get her sleeping in there before baby boy comes.  We picked paint and painted her room this weekend, after helping my sister move out of it.  It looks really cute…now we just need to make another trip to Ikea to pick out furniture and then it’s time to move everything over!  If anyone has any tips for the crib-to-bed transition, I’d love to hear them!  I’ll post pics when we finish her room.  :)

Loving the Arizona Sun

In light of recent information gathered from my husband that is it ridiculously cold in Utah this week (the low is supposed to be 3 degrees on Saturday…WHAT?) I am leaving this post to make all you Utahns jealous. :)

Kaisa and I flew to Arizona on Monday and have been enjoying our week here so much!  My family adores Kaisa (why wouldn’t they?) and she loves all the attention she’s getting.  She also got to meet her new cousin, baby Peyton!  I got a belated birthday giftcard to Motherhood Maternity and picked up a dress I’ve been wanting for a while but could never find in my size in Utah when it was on sale.  I opened my wallet to discover that I had a full punch card for Bahama Buck’s, and enjoyed a free shaved ice (so good)!  And we’ve been eating lots of Christmas candy (thanks mom)!*

Perhaps the best part about Arizona has been missing until today.  It rained all day here on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Unbelieveable!  A good winter storm is rare here, but the desert always needs it so I tried not to complain too much.  But fate has smiled upon me!  Alas, I am looking out my parent’s kithcen window to a beautiful blue sky and lots of SUN!  It will probably get up into the 60’s today.  YES!!!!  I can’t wait to get out there and soak it up!

So…to all you Utahns freezing your buns off…see you Saturday.  Until then, I’m warm, toasty, and loving it!

*Sorry there are no pictures of any of these events.  I forgot my camera, again. :(

WHY???

So, do you ever have those moments in life where you ask yourself why something is the way it is because it makes absolutely no sense?

Yesterday I took Kaisa to the library.  After sitting through storytime, I looked up the call numbers of some books I wanted to check out and we went on our way through the rows of books.  One of the books was on the second level, and being 8 months pregnant, I opted to take the elevator.  Plus, Kaisa loves to push the buttons.  This is where the fun begins.

I let Kaisa push the button to go up.  The doors open, she runs in, and before I could help her up to push the “2″ button, she had pushed that button that says “Call For Help.”  You know, the bright red one meant for emergencies.  Ever wonder what happens when that button is pushed?  Well, now I know, and I’ll tell you.

It calls the Fire Department.

So, I hear this really loud ringing (it’s coming out of a speaker in the elevator) and then a voice saying there is an emergency in the Orem City Library elevator, south wing.  I didn’t know what to do.  Do I push it again?  There is no “cancel” button.  Should I try to talk into this speaker thing?  Can they hear me?

By now, the elevator has taken us up, so I just got off and went and got my books.

We went back down the stairs. :)

Then, as I’m passing the south wing desk, I hear the librarian say into the phone, “sorry about the false alarm.”  I just walk by and pretend not to know what is going on.

So here’s my question.  WHY ON EARTH do they put the elevator emergency button at the eye level of a toddler?????  Does anyone else see the problem here???  Honestly, people, let’s use our brains.

“Want Some Of That”

Up until this morning, Kaisa’s phrases have consisted of no more than two words. You know, “want TV,” or “carry you” (carry me) and such. However, this morning that all changed.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch

I decided I wanted Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast (I know, so healthy), and after getting Kaisa a bowl of Alpha Bits I ran down to the basement to retrieve the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. After I poured my bowl, Kaisa announced that she was done and Nathan cleaned her up and got her down from the table. Kaisa promptly walked up to the counter, pointed to the Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and said “want some of that!”

We poured her a bowl and she finished the whole thing. :)

I really love this stage she is in where she is learning how to communicate better and better every day. It makes life a lot easier. And it’s cute!

iHypnobirth Is Finally Up!

Some of you may have heard me talk about iHypnobirth.com, a website Nathan has been working on for me. Up until today it was just a domain name and empty wordpress theme, but thanks to my wonderful husband, it is now up and running with my first post!!

I am so excited to have this blog/website to talk about my hypnobirth(s). So many people ask me about it, and I am never sure how much they really want to know or whether they are just being nice. So here is your chance…if you really want to know more about it, go to my new website! This will also be a great place for me to blog about my pregnancy/birth experiences without using our family blog. (I know some of you that read this blog would prefer not to read that stuff.) :)

Take a minute to read the “About” page the first time you visit. It gives a lot of background into the method and why I chose it.

If you have any positive (please, not negative) birth experiences you would like me to share on iHypnobirth, feel free to email me or leave me a comment.

So…without further ado…

** Update ** Server changed.  Later and took longer than I wanted. It was a pain, had a coworker help me through it.  Not everything is back to normal yet (sidebar) and I’m trying to convince the Mrs. that we should change our Wordpress theme.  What do you think?   I really don’t think anyone’s going to read this update so please make your presence known in the comments.

I Got Get Gephardt

Wow, what a story I have for you unsuspecting readers! I’m going to give you the shortened version and spare many of the boring details. :)

So, many of you have heard me talk about the problems I have been having with a company Nathan and I bought a water softener from back in February called Water Quest. We were told when we bought it that they would move it for free within a year (we were anticipating moving at the time). A few months later, a lady called me to see if I wanted the unit serviced. I explained that we hadn’t even had it a year yet and didn’t need it serviced, but that we would need it moved. She gladly made the appointment for me. The time came, and they sent their guy to move our softener. After waiting for him for 4 hours, and waiting another 3 hours for him to move it less than a block away, he charged me $300. I was late for my closing, so I wrote the check and told him I’d take it up with Water Quest.

On top of that, when they installed the softener at our first address, the installer ripped out a huge portion of drywall in our furnace room, thus creating a fire hazard which we had to fix before we could sell the condo. Water Quest did send someone to repair it free of charge, but it looked horrible and should have been fixed in the first place.

Back to our move. A couple weeks after moving in, we went to the Home Remodeling Expo and Water Quest was there with two employees. We talked to them and explained what had happened, and they assured us that the company usually did free moves for new customers and to call the owner who would take care of us. I called the owner a few days later and left a message. He never called back, so I called again…and again…and again. Finally, he called me back and proceeded to explain that they don’t usually do free moves, but rather did an “exchange” where they sell our buyer the old unit and get us a new one. I explained that we had been told by 4 different people in his company that they would move it for free, and he told me he would be happy to pay me the money if I would give him the name and number of our buyer so he could try to sell her a unit to come up with the extra money. But he assured me he would pay me back either way and to give him a couple of weeks. I agreed and promptly called their secretary back with the information he wanted.

About 4 weeks later, I still had not heard from him. I called and left a message…nothing. I called and called and called and every time was told that he would get right back to me, he was just really busy. One time I even left a very frustrated voicemail where I made it clear that I was getting to the end of my rope and hoped that would invite a call back. Still, nothing. I felt deliberately ignored and, quite frankly, scammed.

I was seething over it in the shower this morning, when the idea popped into my head to call Get Gephardt on KUTV. When I get something in my head, it’s hard to get out. So, I went online and emailed the station. Within a few hours, I had a phone call back. They told me they were going to look into it. A few minutes later, they called again and told me that if I drove down to Water Quest there would be a check waiting for me. Hallelujah!

When I arrived at the Water Quest office, I could overhear the owner talking on the phone to KUTV. He was obviously quite annoyed that I called them. They finally realized I was there and he came out and confronted me. He basically tried to make me feel horrible for what I did and reluctantly handed me the check. He told me that he had it on his list to call me yesterday and didn’t, and now he was facing this bad press with KUTV. I just looked at him and told him that he should look at it from my perspective. I felt completely ignored and it would have taken one 5 minute phone call to avoid this whole thing. Oh…he also used the fact that they sent the drywall guy out for free to make me feel even more guilty. Come on! That was their fault in the first place!

Anyway, now that I have my check, I am happy. I honestly do like our softener (besides the fact that it was really expensive) but the business needs some work. Their installer is completely unaware of any sense of time and was not very considerate of our property when installing the unit. And the owner has no email or direct phone number to get ahold of him, so that needs to change. Anyway, if you are ever considering buying a water softener from Water Quest, make sure that you clarify with them what is and is not included and be prepared to wait a really long time for any type of installation, servicing, or customer service. I think they have the potential to be a great business if they learn to take better care of their customers and have better communication within the different departments.

I am being interviewed by KUTV tomorrow so look for an episode of Get Gephardt (10pm weeknights, channel 2) starring yours truly! This will be my second time on KUTV this year (first time was back in May when I announced my pregnancy in NYC on CBS). :) It pays to Get Gephardt!

*Update*

I just got a phone call from the owner, and he was very apologetic and wanted to assure me that I am still a valued customer and it was an honest mistake that had just “fallen through the cracks.”  He told me not to hesitate to call if I ever need anything in the future and that this is not typical of their company.  He knows I am yet to interview with KUTV, but his phone call seemed very sincere.  I do feel better knowing that there won’t be any hard feelings in the future.  And hopefully this company does have a long future, since the softener has a lifetime guarantee and it would be nice to have the company that sold it around for that long. :)

My Headboard

My good friend Natalie is a very talented and crafty person and gave me the idea to make my own headboard for our bed.  We don’t own a bedroom set, and I wanted something to spruce up our bed, and our bedroom, a bit.  Overall, it cost about $100 to make and took about an hour to assemble (with three people).  Thanks to Nathan and my great sister-in-law Rachel for helping me make it!!

Headboard

In case you can’t tell, the fabric has bamboo printed on it (we have an Asian theme going in our bedroom).  I found it at the Home Fabrics store by Michael’s on University Parkway.  If you want to learn how to make it, just go here: http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/content/0,21770,845160,00.html

Halloween (Finally)

Here it is nearly Thanksgiving, and I am just now getting my Halloween pics posted!  My life is crazy, what can I say?

For Halloween, Kaisa was a cute little bee, and Nathan and I dressed up as Juno and Paulie Bleeker from the movie “Juno.”

Juno Movie

I took Kaisa trick-or-treating at Nathan’s office in the afternoon.  She got the hang of things really quickly, and loved wandering through the office saying “treat!” and “thank you!” to everyone who had candy.  It was great!  The funniest moment was when she saw the guy who dressed up as Joker from Batman.  She looked at him for a few seconds, then immediately started crying and ran to me with her arms open.  It was sad, but so funny!  We couldn’t stop laughing!

Then we took her to the ward building to a Trunk-or-Treat activity.  Here are some pics from that event.

Kaisa loved Halloween (except for wearing her bee headband!) and made out with an awesome amount of candy!  She just barely finished it off yesterday.  She knew right where I kept it, and would always walk up and point to her pumpkin and ask for “nan-nan” (candy).  She’s asked several times today and I don’t think she understands that it’s really all gone!  Overall, we had a great Halloween!  Now on to Thanksgiving!

Family Pictures

Here are some pictures of the family together.  We had so much fun doing these!  Our photographer was Spencer Hall, he lives in our neighborhood.  Let me know if you would like his information!
